Description

A series of observations were made by William Wire regarding Duncan's excavations near the NE gate in 1852. See Wire's diary 28/8/1852, 1/9/1852, 4/9/1852/6/9/1852, 7/9/1852, 9/9/1852, 10/9/1852, 9/10/1852, 20/12/1852.<1> Observations include a tessellated pavement in 'the meadow adjoining Sheepshead Field on the east' (this has not been identified). Also 'at some distance from it (the Mithraeum) to the west is the remains of a pavement about one foot below the surface composed of red tesserae about 6ft long from east-west and about 4ft wide from North-South', also numerous finds are described.
