Description
Watching brief held due to construction of extension to existing Harbour Master's Office. Two test holes were observed. The upper metre of Test Hole 1 (TH1) was dark grey sandy loam, modern concrete and iron. Below was at least 0.5 m of very dark brown material containing much clinker. Test Hole 2 (TH2) was 1 m deep and penetrated only modern concrete and brick fragments. Perhaps all modern material derived from demolition of the earlier gas works? No archaeological features were observed and no archaeological levels (if they exist) seemed likely to have been affected by the development.<1>
