Description
The monitoring of the ground works for the new access, which was mechanically stripped using a 360 machine with a wide flat bucket, was carried out over a single day under dry conditions and the upcast spoil was inspected closely as the work progressed. In addition a smaller bucket was used to excavate a test pit to determine the depth of the exposed subsoil. In total an area of some 130m2 was mechanically stripped to a depth of 500mm with 200mm of topsoil and 300mm of pale brown clean sandy subsoil adjacent to the Dedham Road to create a bell-shaped access point. At the full depth of 500mm the area exposed was still in subsoil so no archaeological features were revealed and the only stray finds were debris of recent date. A small hand excavated test pit was opened near the road frontage and a small bucket was used to open another pit at the north-eastern corner of the stripped area. Both of these test pits revealed a further 500mm depth of subsoil above orange sand with flints.
The soil strip at 500mm was well above any possible archaeological horizon which from a test pit looked to be 500mm lower.
