Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken by Colchester Archaeological Trust in June 2020 during groundworks for the erection of a new rear extension. The groundworks comprised foundation trenching, 6m long x 0.5m wide x 1m deep, a pit for a soakaway, 1.5m x 1m in area x 1m deep with an accompanying drainage run 8.2m long x 0.25m wide and 0.2m deep. Three layers were recorded: topsoil/build-up L1, c.0.12-0.18m thick, subsoil L2, 0.62-0.68m thick and natural L3, a l light yellow/orange sand encountered at 0.8m below current ground level. No archaeological features or material were encountered, although a capped well, constructed out of red bricks bonded in white mortar and probably 19th-century in date, was uncovered.<1>
