Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken in June 2020 during groundworks for a rear extension. The groundworks comprised the reduction of an area measuring 18.6m² in size x 0.4m in depth to accommodate the extension and foundation trenching 11m long x 0.7m wide x 0.6m deep, around the edge of the reduced area. The excavation of a soakaway, 1.2m x 1.2m in area x 1m deep, with two drainage runs, 5.3m long x 0.3m wide x 0.3m deep, were also monitored. Three layers were recorded: topsoil/build-up L1, 0.06-0.08m thick, subsoil L2, a grey sandy-silt, 0.35-0.37m thick, natural L3, a firm, dry light yellow/orange clay, encountered at a depth of 0.43-0.45m below current ground level. F1, a modern pipe, passed through the area of trenching. No archaeological remains were encountered; some modern pottery, brick, tile and iron objects were recovered but not retained.<1>
