Description
Archaeological excavations were undertaken by Archaeological Solutions at Fingringhoe Ballast Quarry, Fingringhoe, during April and May 2006. Two cremation vessels revealed in Trench 9 during the evaluation (and left in situ at that stage) were excavated along with a further 15 vessels of 2nd century AD date. Four inhumation graves were also identified, although only two contained surviving bone. Two possible pyre deposits or un-urned cremations were discovered c.20m south of these features. A possible 1st century BC/AD field system was discovered, and its 2nd to 4th century succesor. A small number of pits dating to these periods was also present and various undated pits and ditches were defined.<1>
The work followed a fieldwalking survey by Hertfordshire Archaeological Trust in 2000 <2> and trial-trenched evaluation by Archaeological Solutions in 2004 (ECC4185).<3>
