Description
An historic analysis at Historic England Level 2 was carried out by Leigh Alston in October 2019 of The Hedges to inform a planning application.<1>
The Hedges was built as a pair of exceptionally small timber-framed and weatherboarded cottages in the first half of the 19th century; The Hedges first appeared on the tithe map of 1843. The two cottages consisted of only a single ground-floor room extending to just 12 ft in length by 11 in width, heated by a gable chimney and probably with access to a small rear lean-to. Unusually, both appear to have shared the same central entrance and staircase, as noted in a parish history published in 1998. The fabric of the walls is now largely hidden, with the remaining weatherboarding only discovered during recent investigations, and the building may have been raised in height and re-roofed later in the 19th century. Its present render and windows date from a major refurbishment of the mid 20th century which included a large two-storied rear extension, with further additions to both gables, and the original cottages are now unrecognisable from the exterior.
