Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken in June 2020 during groundworks for new side and rear extensions. A total of c.40m of foundation trenching was excavated, 700mm wide x 1100mm deep, under supervision for the rear and side extensions. The trenches revealed 100-150mm of patio sub-base over 300-400mm of brown sandy subsoil below which the natural glaciofluvial deposit was orange silty sand with flints. The trenches did not reveal any archaeological features; small brick and tile fragments and iron nails of later Post medieval date were recovered from the upcast spoil (not retained).<1> The monitoring followed the excavation of two evaluation test pits in February 2020 (ECC4426).
