Description

Archaeological monitoring was carried out by Colchester Archaeological Trust in April 2020 during ground reduction for a new classroom extension.<1> An area measuring 96.2m² was initially reduced through topsoil (L1, 0.12-0.14m thick, grey/brown silty-loam). In places, L1 overlay a modern construction layer (L2, c.0.1-0.15m thick). L1 and L2 sealed a modern accumulation layer (L3, 0.2- 0.35m thick, yellow/brown sandy-silt which in turn sealed a cover loam (L4, 0.13-0.15m thick, brown silty-loam with CBM flecks). Beaneath L4, there was a further cover loam (L5, soft dry medium grey silty-loam). No archaeological features were encountered. Six sherds (338g) of Roman building material (tegulae and brick) were found in L4 (but not retained). The site was not stripped down to natural geological deposits.
