Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken by Colchester Archaeological Trust in March 2020 during groundworks for a patio and a dwarf wall (which comprised the stripping of an area measuring 15m² by up to 0.42m). Two layers were recorded. Topsoil (L1, c.0.1-0.22m thick) sealed a modern levelling layer (L2). Only a modern post-hole F1 was recorded, as excavations did not extend beyond modern layers, although a small quantity of residual Roman pottery and ceramic building material was recovered from L2. This included a sherd of Roman imbrex, painted wall plaster and a sherd of Coarse oxidised and related ware (fabric DJ) from a flagon.<1>
