Between February and June 2020, Cotswold Archaeology carried out an archaeological watching brief of groundworks associated with the creation of a new modular deck car park at Colchester Hospital, Turner Road, Essex, on the site of previous car park. This involved monitoring the excavation of post pads, drain runs and the footprint of an attenuation tank. No archaeological features or artefacts were encountered during the watching brief. The overburden consisted of a 0.10 – 0.20m thick tarmac car park surface over a 0.50m thick layer of hogging material. There was evidence that the underlying ground had been subject to extensive truncation and landscaping during the construction of the original car park, which had been terraced into a slope, perhaps to a depth of 2m at its eastern end.
