Description

A strip, map and record excavation was undertaken by Colchester Archaeological Trust in March 2020 along a new road line into the Colchester Northern Gateway (South) development site. Three separate areas, totalling 3336.3m², were stripped under archaeological supervision. Two layers were recorded. Ploughsoil (L1, c.0.35m thick,) sealed natural clays (L2, light/medium yellow/orange/brown clay). Three charcoal-rich pits (F2, F5 and F7) were uncovered (in addition to the eleven which were excavated during the evaluation stage of this investigation) one of which (F5) produced a Late Neolithic flint arrowhead. Two of these pits showed signs of in situ scorching/burning. Three undated pits and a modern ditch were also recorded.<1> The work followed a trial-trenched evaluation by Archaeological Services Durham University in 2018-19 (ECC4302).<2>
