An archaeological excavation was undertaken by Colchester Archaeological Trust in December 2019 in advance of the construction of a new school building. An area measuring 448.1m² was reduced through modern topsoil (L1, 0.2m thick), a layer of hoggin (L2, c.0.37m thick), a modern build-up layer (L3, c.0.1m thick,) and a post-medieval accumulation layer (L4, 0.39-0.42m thick) onto natural (L5), encountered at a depth of 1.1m below current ground level. The excavations revealed a cluster of (intercutting) ditches and pits which yielded a considerable quantity of pottery (257 sherds of Roman pottery weighing of 9.3 kg) indicating the 3rd and 4th centuries as the primary phase of activity at the site, and suggesting the remains of a mid to late Roman villa or farmstead are located in the close vicinity. There were 277 sherds (just over 61kg) of ceramic building material and Roman CBM included brick, tegulae, imbrex, and box flue-tile. In addition, five sherds (10g) of handmade flint-tempered pottery were recovered during the excavation, one from pit F14, three from pit / tree throw F15 and one from pit F17. All of this material was residual in later contexts. Two medieval or post-medieval ditches were recorded in the northern half of the excavation area.<1> This followed an trial-trenched evaluation in July 2019 (ECC4349).<2>
