Description

Hull notes, 'Throughout 1956 the Co-operative Society was preparing the space behind premises on Long Wire Street for building. The space lies opposite the southern half of the Wesleyan Church, and was the yards of no. 13 and 15 (Lennard's and Taylor's). The ground level was first reduced by about four feet, and in doing this practically nothing was found, but at about four feet the remains of the Roman levels began to appear, and over some part of the area the uppermost Roman level was a red tessellated pavement. It was very much broken up, and a trench down the middle of it, running E-W and full of broken mortar indicated the position of a wall, so that there were at least two rooms so paved. Traces of the paving could be seen continuing northwards under the wall of the next property, and here the workmen thought they could see coloured tesserae, but I (M.R.H.) could see none. The patches of pavement were measured and planned by Mr H.W. Poulter, who also photographed them. Next a shaft was cut against the corner of an existing building and this came upon a number of large blocks of septaria, undressed, lying in a trench full of dark soil. Being undressed these blocks must be from the foundation; they were so piled together that they appeared to run E-W, but in fact they occupied a foundation-trench which ran N-S and only part of which was seen, so that its width is not known. Its top was at about 4ft from the old surface. Next an irregular shaped area was further lowered to provide some sort of a basement. In doing this some rather vague traces of other walls were cut; these were not so deep nor so broad as that already described, and need not necessarily be Roman, though I believe the one running N-S to be so. A basement room of Tudor bricks was in the middle of this work; it was full of rubbish, including a vast quantity of broken clay tobacco pipes, and was entirely removed save perhaps a remnant of the lowest part of it.'
