Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken by Colchester Archaeological Trust in July 2019 following emergency gas repair works by Cadent Gas. The pit was excavated through accumulated modern paving layers with underlying subbase approximately 0.7m thick onto a ?demolition layer. Groundworks at this site revealed the disarticulated remains (53 fragments) of at least two individuals that were likely interred at the church, and were disturbed and reburied during its demolition in 1878. A sample of radiocarbon-dated human bone indicated the burials date from the late 17th to the late 19th century (179 ± 22; AD 1670 to 1950 at 95.4% confidence; SUERC-90684).<1>
