Description

A single trial-trench, 5m long x 1.8m wide, was excavated adjacent to a new dwelling in October 2019, as a remedial investigation (the evaluation should have been undertaken prior to the erection of the new building). The trench was excavated through modern topsoil (L1, c.0.20m thick) and subsoil (L2, c.0.20-0.30m thick) onto natural (L3), encountered at a depth of c.0.45-0.55m below current ground level. Two modern pits were defined. Pit F1, 0.7m wide x 0.24m deep, contained fragments of coal, modern CBM and pottery sherds (none were retained). Pit F2 extended beyond the limit of excavation; the exposed extent was 1m wide x 0.29m deep. It also contained coal, and modern CBM and pottery sherds.<1>
