Description
An historic analysis at Historic England Level 3 was carried out by Leigh Alston in August 2019 of the Langenhoe Lion, following the granting of planning consent for demolition (and erection of three dwellings).<1>
The building was recorded by the same name in Pigot’s Directory of Essex for 1828/9 and was shown on a map of 1838 with its present outline (including a distinctive rear lean-to). It appears to be absent from earlier maps of 1777 and 1805 which show a large common green known as Abberton Green on the site, and was probably built when the Langenhoe section of this green was enclosed to form new farm land in c.1820. This date accords with the present structure which consists of uniform red brick laid in Flemish Bond beneath a slate roof. The building underwent several major refurbishments and extensions during the second half of the 20th century that left its original layout almost unrecognisable
