Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken by Colchester Archaeological Trust between July 2019 and January 2020 during the excavation of post-holes for a new gate and fencing, the removal of artificial turf from a hockey pitch and the removal of three hammerthrowing circles. In total, the excavation of 76 post-holes were monitored. For the most part, excavations occurred through modern topsoil (L1, c.0.19-0.46m thick) directly onto modern concrete. Elsewhere, L1 sealed subsoil (L2, c.0.39-0.41m thick), which overlay natural (L3, yellow/orange/brown sand, encountered at a depth of c.0.6m below current ground level). No archaeological features or material were encountered. The artificial turf was removed from the hockey pitch, an area measuring 6,007m², revealing an underlying layer of modern tarmac. Three hammerthrowing circles were removed. They were formed of a layer of solid concrete 0.1-0.16m thick and an underlying layer of hardcore 0.16m thick, beneath which lay L1. Following the removal of the hammerthrowing circles, the surrounding area, approximately 75m², was then reduced by 0.2m. No archaeological features were observed, but a sherd of Roman tegula and three fragments of peg-tile were recovered.<1>
