Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken by Colchester Archaeological Trust in November 2019 during groundworks for a new extension. An area of c.245m² was reduced by up to 0.48m and pits for piling mats and service trenching were then excavated in the stripped area. Groundworks penetrated three layers. Modern topsoil (L1, c.0.10m thick) sealed subsoil (L2, c.0.12-0.14m thick) beneath which lay natural (L3, yellow/brown clay) encountered at a depth of 0.22-0.25m below current ground level. A modern pit was encountered but no earlier archaeological features or finds.<1>
