Description
An archaeological evaluation, comprising two trial-trenches each 10m long x 1.80m wide, was carried out at Colchester County High School for Girls in July 2019 in advance of the construction of a new school building. They were excavated through modern topsoil (L1, 0.2-0.21m thick), a layer of hoggin (L2, c 0.37m thick), a modern buildup layer (L3, 0.07-0.1m thick) and an accumulation layer (L4, 0.39-0.42m thick) onto natural (L5). Two pits (F2 and F3 in T2) and a ditch F1 (F1) contained Roman material were uncovered, as well as a (possible) pit F3 (cut by F2). F3 also extended beyond the limit of the trench.<1>
26 sherds (619g) of Roman pottery (two vessels (rim EVREP) while the rim EVE is 0.45) was recovered from the evaluation. The assemblage can be dated to the period from the second half of the 2nd century until the early 3rd century AD. There were also 80 fragments (c.2.7kg) of ceramic building material (CBM), including pieces of tegula, imbrex, flue tile, brick and a possible piece of antefix.
The evaluation was followed by an excavation in 2019 (ECC4406).
