Description
Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken by Colchester Archaeological Trust in September 2019 during groundworks for a detached room (foundation trenching and a service trench. Five layers were recorded. In general, modern topsoil (L1, c.0.21-0.32m thick) and post-medieval/modern accumulation (L2, c.0.2-0.27m thick) overlay a layer of mixed subsoil and stone and gravel (L3-L4, c.0.22-0.25m thick). Layers L3 and L4 are probably natural interface layers above the natural sand (L5) encountered at a depth of c.0.63-0.76m below current ground level. A post-medieval ditch F1 was defined, c.1.56 m wide, aligned N to S along the eastern edge of the foundation trench. The ditch was sealed by L1 and cut L2, L4 and L5. The ditch F1 contained a fragment (25g) of medieval/post-medieval peg-tile and accumulation layer L2 contained one sherd of post-medieval red earthenware pottery (fabric 40, 21g) dating from c.1500 to 19th/20th century. A fragment of clay pipe stem (3.2g) was also recovered from the from ditch.<1>
