Description

Archaeological monitoring was carried out by Colchester Archaeological Trust in July 2019 in (below) the basement of the former Colchester & East Essex Co-op building, 1-21 Long Wyre Street, Colchester, during (limited) groundworks to facilitate revisions to the internal layout and elevations relating to a small section of the Long Wyre Street frontage.<1> A series of large intercutting pits was uncovered, dated to the 19th or 20th century and probably just prior to the construction of the current building in 1925-6. Several of the pits were overlain by the remains of a modern wall foundation. A number of undatable post-holes were also uncovered in TP4; these may relate to a series of early Roman post-holes recorded during excavations of the site undertaken in 1997-8 (ECC2220 and ECC2335). The remains of a (2nd to 4th century) Roman hearth or oven F13, 0.5m wide and 0.19m deep, was defined in Test Pit 5, which contained considerable quantities of charred cereal grains (wheat, rye, spelt, barley and oats); the cereal grains were dominated by those of wheat (Triticum sp.) and rye (Secale cereale L.). A small patch of possible in situ Boudiccan destruction horizon lay on L3 adjacent to (modern) pit F10 in TP1.<2>
