Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken by Colchester Archaeological Trust during groundworks for a new extension (18.6m of foundation trenching, 0.5m wide x 1.2m deep). Groundworks revealed four layers. A modern crush-surface (L1, c.0.21-0.23m thick) overlay topsoil (L2, c.0.41-0.45m thick). L2 sealed a layer of subsoil (L3, c.0.25-0.29m thick) beneath which lay natural (L4, orange sand), encountered at a depth of c.0.9m below current ground level. No archaeological features or finds were encountered.<1>
