Description

Archaeoloigcal monitroing and recording was undertaken by Colchester Archaeological Trust during the installation of new lighting for the war memorial (service trenching totalling c.32m in length x 0.2m wide x 0.3m deep and two connection pits, one measuring 0.7m x 1m, the other 1m x 1m). Excavations revealed three layers. In the grass surrounding the monument, the trenching penetrated topsoil (L1). In the paved area, excavations occurred through a modern stone slabbed surface with a concrete base (L2) onto a sand foundation layer (L3, orange sand). No archaeological features or finds were encountered and groundworks did not penetrate beyond modern layers.<1>
