Description

An archaeological trial-trenched evaluation, comprising 20 trenches each 30m long x 1.8m wide, was undertaken by Archaeology South-East in March 2019 across a 2ha. site in advance of a planning application for residential development. The topsoil [001] varied in thickness from 0.25m to 0.48m (though mostly 0.3m–0.4m). The subsoil [002] consisted of mid brown to pale greyish brown silty clay and varied in thickness from 0.02m to 0.18m (on average around 0.1m). Exposed natural deposits [003] in the base of the trenches comprised brown, yellow and orange sandy clay with occasional patches of pale grey silty clay, reddish orange gravel and sand.Three pieces of abraded possible Roman tile were recovered from two pits [1/009] and [2/005]; in the absence of other dating evidence this material is regarded as potentially residual in later features. The majority of the recorded archaeological remains were linear ditches relating to field boundaries. Two parallel, NNE/SSW aligned, boundary ditches crossed the site, c.60m apart. One contained sherds of medieval or early post-medieval pottery and the other was more clearly post-medieval. Other perpendicular ditch remains might constitute associated sub-divisions of the same field system.<1>
