Description

Three 3m x 3m test pits were investigated by Archaeology South-East in February 2019 across the 3.84ha. site at East Bay Mill, which all contained late post-medieval/modern deposits. Several layers of made-ground, consisting of demolition rubble and levelling deposits, were observed across all test pits. The observed deposit sequence varied across the site, with all test pits containing various layers of made-ground and levelling material. Test Pit 1 was machined to a depth of 1.12m below the ground surface, at which point the top of natural (identified as orange-brown compact clay) was exposed. Test pit 2 was machine-excavated to a depth of c.2.0m without reaching the natural deposits. A late post-medieval brick wall foundation [3/001] was revealed in the southern part of Test pit 3, measuring c.1.90m wide and 1.80m deep, extending east and west beyond the limits of the test pit. It corresponds with the location of the 19th-century East Bay Mill buildings. Natural was encountered in a small sondage at c.2.0m in depth. No archaeological features or deposits predating the late post-medieval/modern period were encountered within the test pits.<1>
