Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken at Dedham Sports Club by John Newman in February 2019 during the groundworks for a new internal officials room, new terrace and new access ramp. A total 17m of foundation trench, 500mm wide x 700mm deep, was excavated for the access ramp. The trenches revealed a deposit profile comprising 150mm of slab and sub-base over 250mm of remnant topsoil and above 300mm of silty sand subsoil. At the base of the trenches, the exposed natural glaciofluvial deposit comprised orange-brown silty sand. The trenches did not reveal any archaeological features with the only stray finds being occasional small fragments of late post-medieval brick and tile and a small stem fragment (2g) from a clay tobacco pipe.<1>
