Description

A trial-trenched evaluation was carried out by PCA in December 2018, following demolition of the tram depot and prior to redevelopment. A total of 11 trial trenches were proposed, but due to site constraints only eight evaluation trenches, totalling 77.5m of trenching, were excavated and recorded.<1> The evaluation identified a single pit dating to the post-medieval period as well as a wall, relating to either a basement of a building fronting onto Magdalen Street or with the construction of the Bus Station, and a wall foundation. Further walls of modern date were also identified which related to inspection pits for the maintenance of trams and/or buses. Severe landscaping of the site prior to the construction of the bus depot in 1903 removed substantial amounts of the natural overburden, and this would have destroyed any earlier archaeological remains (had they been present) on the site. The evaluation followed recording of the standing buildings, also by PCA, in October 2018, prior to demolition (ECC4252).<2> It was followed by limited mitigation in February 2019 (ECC4309).<1>
