Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken by Colchester Archaeological Trust in September 2019 during groundworks for side and rear extensions. An area measuring approximately 269m² was reduced to a depth of c.0.90m below current ground level and four pits, each 1.5m x 1.5m in area x c.0.1-0.15m, were excavated to remove the supports for the old petrol station canopy. The ground reduction occurred through two layers. A modern concrete and tarmac surface and underlying sub-base (L1, c.0.28-0.4m thick) sealed ?subsoil (L2). A well F1 (1.6m in diameter x 10-15m deep) of late 18th- to mid 19th-century date and a wall foundation F2 and a possible culvert or soakaway F3 which formed part of a school constructed at the site in 1851 were uncovered.<1>
