Description

A trial trench archaeological evaluation (three trial-trenches, each 20m long x 1.8m wide) was undertaken at Wakes Hall in January 2019 in advance of the part-demolition and extension of an existing building, its conversion into twelve dwellings, and the construction of a further ten dwellings. Two concrete foundations (F1 in T1 and F3 in T3, each measuring 0.40-0.45m wide x 0.12-0.17m deep) which probably form part of building (or buildings) from a camp associated with a Second World War ammunition dump at Wakes Colne were uncovered, along with a ditch of uncertain date (F2 in T2); the hutted camp and ammunition dump are shown on a 1954 map and also on the 1958 OS 1:10k (Maps 1 and 2 of the report). No archaeological finds were recovered. The camp possibly supplied troops manning the pillboxes and defences around Chappel Viaduct immediately to the east, part of the Eastern Command Line and was reportedly converted to house displaced persons after the War.<1>
