Description

Archaeological monitoring was carried out by Colchester Archaeological Trust in November 2018 during groundworks for the replacement of an existing garage with a new one. The development site was situated within the footprint of a demolished garage where ground level had previously been lowered/terraced by 0.6-0.8m (presumably when the original garage was constructed). Further ground reduction took place with an area of 7.7m x 5.7m. Topsoil (L1, c.0.12m thick) and 0.1m of natural sand (L2, yellow/orange/brown sand) was excavated. No new foundations were excavated as the new garage was built on a raft. No archaeological features were identified; two areas of modern disturbance are likely associated with the construction of the original (demolished) garage.<1>
