Description

A loose note in Hull's bound notebook records 'January 1957: A trench was cut for an electric cable on the line of the Roman wall and just outside it near Ryegate. It revealed no trace at all of any remains of the Roman gate or road. The trench was cut to a depth of about 5ft and the earth removed was uniformly black, with no stratification. There was a little pottery (almost all Roman, with a few 18th century fragments) very broken single fragments of different vessels, including pieces of White Ware and a small mortarium cup. <1>
