Description
Pre-Construct Archaeology Limited was commissioned in 2018 to carry out (Historic England Level 3) historic building recording of the former Colchester Bus Depot, Magdalen Street, Colchester. The recording was completed prior to the proposed demolition of the depot as part of proposals to redevelop the site to deliver a student accommodation complex and facilities.<1>
The survey confirmed that the tram depot, though originally built by the Borough in 1906, incorporated at least two pre-existing buildings, one, possibly a former stable, dating from the early 19th century. The offices to the depot were refurbished and
extended in 1935, while the bus depot was built on land to the east (formerly 33-36 Magdalen Street) in 1938. This bus depot building was subsequently enlarged between 1952 and 1964-66, to the rear, while a new store and WCs and the transport
depot roof was repaired and altered in 1946-7. The bus operation was privatised and sold off in 1993 but remained in use until it was advertised for sale by the Borough Council in early 2015.
