Description
An archaeological excavation was carried out at Kingswode Hoe School, 18 Sussex Road, Colchester, by Colchester Archaeological Trust in October and November 2018, following the removal of three temporary classrooms and in advance of the construction of a new two-storey teaching building. An area measuring 348m² was mechanically excavated under the supervision of an archaeologist. Two layers were recorded: topsoil L1, which measured 0.24-0.65m deep, onto natural sands and gravels (L2).<1>
Three 1st century AD inhumation burials (F5, F6 and F10) were defined dated to the 1st century AD, all poorly preserved in terms of bone condition (there was sufficent bone in F5 to suggest an adolescent or adult). In F5, there were six hobnails located in the centre of the grave, suggesting the individual was buried with shoes placed alongside them. A Late Iron Age/Early Roman assemblage of pottery was recovered from the grave fill. Four iron nails of Roman date were recovered from F6, suggesting that the individual may have been buried in a coffin. A base from a northern Gaulish butt beaker was recovered from the grave, along with several other sherds of Late Iron Age/Early Roman pottery. A large part of a ceramic Amphora stopper was recovered from F10, along with several other sherds of Late Iron Age/Early Roman pottery.
A series of pits dated to the same period were uncovered. Two large post-medieval quarry pits (F2 and F23, the former feature in excess of 0.24m deep, and the latter more than 0.93m deep) extended across the northern half of the site. F23 contained 38 fragments (15g) of cremated human bone, indicating the pit had disturbed a cremation burial. Three undated pits (F13b, F17 and F18) were 0.58-1.19m wide x 0.25-0.32m deep.
