A pre-determination trial-trenched evaluation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology (commissioned by CgMs) in 2018.<1><3> Thirty-five 30m long x 1.8m wide trenches were excavated (a 3% sample of the 6.89ha. site). The remains of the post-medieval field system were identified within nine of the trenches, correlating with maps dating back to 1840 and with cropmarks identified on aerial photography. Five other undated ditches were also exposed across the southern half of site. Four of these crossed trenches on a similar alignment to the post-medieval field system and probably represent further field boundaries (although they are not marked on the historic maps). A single small and undated ditch (ditch 2703 in T27), close to the southern boundary of the site, diverged from this alignment (and was aligned NE to SW). A single item of prehistoric worked flint, a flake which cannot be closely dated, was recovered from ditch 1603 (T16); there was also a fragment of ceramic building material (10g), which cannot be closely dated, from ditch 1203 (T13). The trial trenching followed a geophysical survey by SUMO Survey (ECC4166) and was followed by post-determination trial-trenched evaluation in December 2018 (ECC4461).<2><3>
