Description

A trial-trenched evaluation was undertaken by Groundworks Archaeology in May 2018 comprising five 10m-long x 1.80m-wide trenches. The evaluation revealed a high degree of truncation to the natural deposits with a layer of make up (102) present across the site. Trenches 1 and 4 contained archaeological deposits, with Trench 1 containing two 20th century pits and Trench 4 containing a Post-medieval building with two further 20th century rubbish pits. The building is marked on the St Botolph Tithe map of 1839 and is shown up until 1956 at which time or soon after it was demolished. The two rubbish pits in Trench 4 contained much building material in the form of brick and tile and it is likely that this is the result of the demolition of the adjacent building. None of these features have been assigned Monument codes.<1>
