Description

A trial-trenched evaluation, comprising 12 trenches, was undertaken by Archaeological Solutions in 2004. Trenches 1-10 measured 45m x 1.8m and Trenches 11-12 50m x 1.8m in size (550m of trenching in total). A number of features were recorded in T1, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11 and 12. These included two Roman urned cremations in T9 (F1013 and F1014), undated pits, postholes and ditches. Neither of the cremations were excavated/lifted.<1> The trial-trenched evaluation followed a field-walking evaluation by Archaeological Solutions (then Hertfordshire Archaeological Trust) in 2000.<2> It was followed by an excavation in 2006 (when the cremations were excavated)(ECC4498).<3>
