Description

Ten 1m x 1m archaeological test pits were excavated in March 2010 by 36 HEFA participants from Clacton County High School, Gable Hall School, Clacton Coastal Academy, St Helena School and Furtherwick Park School.<1><2> Test Pit 1 (WME/10/1): Wellhouse Cottage, 3 Poenae Chase. TM 601505 213747. This test-pit produced two sherds (7g) of Roman pottery, as well as 16th century and later pottery. Test Pit 2 (WME/10/2): Wellhouse Cottage, 3 Poenae Chase. TM 601485 213733. This test-pit produced two large sherds (37g) of Roman pottery, as well as 16th century and later pottery. Test Pit 3 (WME/10/3): Upland House, 2 Kingsland Road. TM 601472 213115. Nearly all the pottery from this test-pit was Victorian, but there were two pieces of medieval (12th-14th century) Essex Grey ware pottery. Test Pit 4 (WME/10/4): Upland House, 2 Kingsland Road. TM 601472 213115 (this grid ref. is incorrect). This test-pit produced a lot of medieval pottery, dating to the 12th century. There were also smaller quantities dating from around AD 1400 onwards. There was also a piece (7g) of Roman pottery and a large quantity of Victorian. Test Pit 5 (WME/10/5): 16 Upland Road. TM 601381 213167. The test pit produced two sherds (7g) of Bronze Age pottery, one sherd (2g) of Roman pottery, a sherd of Late Medieval Colchester ware and a Victorian sherd. Test Pit 6 (WME/10/6): 9 Reymead Close. TM 601221 213068. All the pottery from this test-pit was Victorian. Test Pit 7 (WME/10/7): 64 St Peters Road. TM 600671 212901. All the pottery from this test-pit was Victorian. Test Pit 8 (WME/10/8): 12 Captains Road. TM 600879 212779. The test pit produced a single sherd of 17th century pottery. Test Pit 9 (WME/10/9): 25 Yorick Road. TM 601188 212651. The test pit produced two sherds of 16th century pottery and one Victorian. Test Pit 10 (WME/10/10): 66 Empress Avenue. TM 602057 212736. The test pit produced three sherds (71g) of Roman pottery.
