Twenty-two 1m x 1m archaeological test pits were excavated in April 2008 by HEFA participants from Tendring Technology College, Maningtree High School, Colbayns High School, St Helena School, Thomas Lord Audley School, Alderman Blaxill School, Woodlands School, Clacton County High School and The Plume School.<1><2> Test Pit 1 (WME/08/1): 9 Reymead Close. TM 601211 213065. The test pit produced two sherds (9g) of Bronze Age pottery as well as Victorian pottery. Test Pit 2 (WME/08/2): 5 Reymead Close. TM 601206 213084. All the pottery from this test-pit was Victorian. Test Pit 3 (WME/08/3): 28 Firs Road. TM 00862 213089. All the pottery from this test-pit was Victorian. Test Pit 4 (WME/08/4): 54 Firs Chase. TM 600485 213025. All the pottery from this test-pit was Victorian. Test Pit 5 (WME/08/5): 60 Firs Chase. TM 600480 213081. The pottery from this test-pit was Victorian, apart from one possible 17th century sherd. Test Pit 6 (WME/08/6): The Firs, 19 Firs Chase. TM 600346 213021. The pottery from this test-pit was Victorian, apart from one possible 16th-17th century sherd. Test Pit 7 (WME/08/7): 15 Firs Chase. TM 600273 212956. All the pottery from this test-pit was medieval, dating between 1100 and 1350. Test Pit 8 (WME/08/8): 8 Firs Chase. TM 600164 212863. Most of the pottery from this test-pit was Victorian, with three earlier (from the 16th century) sherds. Test Pit 9 (WME/08/9): Elm Tree House, 104 Coast Road. TM 600127 212781. The test pit produced a varied assemblage of medieval pottery, including Dutch, Spanish and German wares from the 1500s. Test Pit 10 (WME/08/10): 15 Firs Chase. TM 600276 212948. This test-pit produced one sherd of pottery, dating to c.1400-1550. Test Pit 11 (WME/08/11): 15 Firs Chase. TM 600249 212932. All the pottery from this test-pit was Victorian. Test Pit 12 (WME/08/12): 15 Firs Chase. TM 600241 212938. All the pottery from this test-pit was Victorian. Test Pit 13 (WME/08/13): 15 Firs Chase. TM 600266 212974. No pottery was recovered from this test pit. Test Pit 14 (WME/08/14): 8 St Peters Road. TM 600698 212556. All the pottery from this test-pit was 19th century or later. Test Pit 15 (WME/08/15): 23 Church Road. TM 600785 212541. This test-pit produced a single sherd (7g) of Roman Grey Ware pottery, two sherds (5g) of 18th century Staffordshire White Salt-Glazed Stoneware and also Victorian pottery. Test Pit 16 (WME/08/16): 15 Church fields. TM 600753 212643. Most of the pottery from this test-pit dates to the 19th century, but there was one medieval (12th or 13th century) sherd and one 16th century sherd. Test Pit 17 (WME/08/17): 12 Captains Road. TM 600878 212783. There was a sherd of 8th or 9th century Middle Saxon Ipswich Ware pottery from this test pit along with Victorian pottery. Test Pit 18 (WME/08/18): 50 High Street. TM 600985 212743. Twelve sherds of Roman pottery (including two Samian sherds) and also two sherds of Middle Saxon Ipswich Ware were recovered from this test pit. The test-pit also produced a small amount of Victorian pottery. Test Pit 19 (WME/08/19): 33 Yorick Road. TM 601262 212647. This test-pit produced a small amount (4 sherds weighing 15g) of Middle Iron Age pottery and a sherd (2g) of early post medieval Glazed Red earthenware pottery. Test Pit 20 (WME/08/20): 19 Grove Avenue. TM 601390 212521. All the pottery from this test pit was Victorian. Test Pit 21 (WME/08/21): 13 Prince Albert Road. TM 601569 212613. All the pottery from this test pit was Victorian. Test Pit 22 (WME/08/22): Elm Tree House, 104 Coast Road. TM 600150 212836 (this grid ref. is incorrect). Most of the pottery from this test-pit was Victorian, but there were also three sherds from the 16th century onwards.
