Ten 1m x 1m archaeological test pits were excavated in 2007 by 30 HEFA participants from Clacton County High School, Thomas Lord Audley School and Language College, Passmores School and Technology College, Manningtree High School and The Plume School.<1><2> Test Pit 1 (WME/07/1): Clarrys Cottage, 10 High Street. (TM) 601011 212489. Most of the pottery from this test-pit was Victorian, although there was a single piece of later 16th century Redware. Test Pit 2 (WME/07/2): Orchard Cottage, 2 Beach Road. (TM) 601102 212548. Most of the pottery from this test-pit was Victorian, although there was a single piece of mid-late 17th century Staffordshire Slipware. Test Pit 3 (WME/07/3): 18 Barfield Road. (TM) 601178 212804. Most of the pottery from this test-pit was Victorian. However, there was also a sherd (3g) of Late Bronze Age pottery, a sherd (18g) of Roman pottery and a sherd of medieval (13th-14th century) Essex Red pottery. Test Pit 4 (WME/07/4): 69 High Street. (TM) 600971 212862. This test pit produced Victorian pottery as well as three sherds of medieval pottery. Test Pit 5 (WME/07/5): Yew Tree House, High Street. (TM) 600825 212476. This test-pit produced a sherd (4g) of Iron Age pottery, as well as medieval and later pottery. Test Pit 6 (WME/07/6): 33 Church fields. (TM) 600790 212679. All the pottery from the test-pit was Victorian apart from single sherds of Late medieval Colchester ware and Glazed Red Earthenware. Test Pit 7 (WME/07/7): 154A Coast Road. (TM) 600162 213147. The pottery from this test-pit was 13th century or later, but most of it was of Victorian date. Test Pit 8 (WME/07/8): 10 Clarrys Cottage, High Street. (TM) 601011 212496. Only one sherd of pottery was found in this test-pit, of 19th century date. Test Pit 9 (WME/07/9): Yew Tree House, High Street. (TM) 600822 212458. The test pit produced single sherds of Iron Age (7g) and Roman (6g) pottery, as well as pottery from the 12th century onwards. Test Pit 10 (WME/07/10): 13 Beach Road. (TM) 601160 212509. This test-pit only produced only three sherds of Victorian pottery.
