Description
Six 1m x 1m archaeological test pits were excavated in June by 19 HEFA participants from Clacton County High School, Manningtree High School, Tendring Technology College and The Colne Community School.<1><2>
Test Pit 1 (WME/06/1): Yew Tree House, High Street. (TM) 600854 212481. Three sherds (7g) of Roman pottery, a fragment of Roman box-flue tile and two small tesserae were recovered from WME/06/1. The test pit also produced a small number of sherds dating to the medieval and post medieval periods.
Test Pit 2 (WME/06/2): 6 The Square. (TM) 600636 212537. All the pottery from this test pit dated to the end of the medieval period onwards.
Test Pit 3 (WME/06/3): Dirleton Cottage, 30 Firs Chase. (TM) 600390 212892. A range of medieval and post medieval pottery, dating from c.1200 onwards, was recovered from Test Pit 3.
Test Pit 4 (WME/06/4): 29 Melrose Road. (TM) 601213 212777. All the pottery from this test pit was dated to the 19th century.
Test Pit 5 (WME/06/5): Fountains Cottage, 2 Queens Corner. (TM) 601524 213113. There was a full range of most of the commonest pottery types from c.1200 onwards.
Test Pit 6 (WME/06/6): 154a Coast Road. (TM) 600157 213148. There was a full range of most of the commonest pottery types from c.1200 onwards.
