Description

A single trial trench, 8.0m long x 1.8m wide, was excavated across the footprint (and in advance of) a new dwelling (CBC planning application 180144). The trench was excavated through modern topsoil (L1, c.0.15-0.3m thick) onto natural (L2). The evaluation revealed the west side of a ditch, assumed to be the remains of the central ditch of the Triple Dyke (MCC7041). The eastern edge of the ditch was located outside the evaluation trench; three small test-holes suggest that the ditch measured between 5.2m-6.5m wide. The ditch was excavated to a depth of 0.9m but the base was not reached (and it was not possible to establish the depth by auger); the fill of the ditch was described as a 'soft, moist, medium yellow/brown slightly loamy sandy-silt, containing abundant gravel and stone'. There were no archaeological finds recovered from the evaluation.<1>
