Description
Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken in February 2018 during the excavation of four hand-excavated test pits, each 1.1m in size x 0.9m deep, for new rugby posts. A Roman socketed iron spearhead, dated to the 1st century AD, was recovered as a residual find from a post-Roman accumulation layer. In addition, a small quantity of Roman finds was recovered from soil layers (L1 & L2) in foundation posts 1 and 4, comprising pottery, ceramic building material (CBM) and animal bone. Almost all of the Roman finds, where closely-datable, were of early Roman (mid 1st to 2nd century) date. Post-Roman finds were limited to a single small piece of tile which is probably pegtile.<1>
