Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording was carried out in January 2018 during the groundworks for a new extension (Colchester Borough Council planning application 170725). A total of 12m of 500mm wide x 900-1000mm deep foundation trench was hand excavated following the breaking up of a 120mm thick concrete yard surface. Below the concrete yard surface, the deposit profile comprised 800mm of clean sandy subsoil. The only disturbance revealed in the subsoil was a ceramic drainage pipe of recent date and the only stray finds in the upcast spoil were occasional small fragments of 19th to 20th century brick or tile. No archaeological features or finds were defined.<1>
