Description

Three trial-trenches (39m in total x 1.8m wide) were excavated at Colchester County High School for Girls in January 2018, in advance of the granting of planning consent for the construction of a multi-functional hall and two additional car parks - one (T1) in a grassed area on the west side of the school and two (T2 and T3) in an existing car park (CBC planning application 172464). Natural was encountered at c.0.65m in T1 and 0.90m in T2 and T3. The evaluation defined three undated pits, two post-Roman pits and two natural features. T1 contained a possible Medieval pit (F3), a post Roman pit (F4) and two undated pits (F2 and F5), all of which were very shallow (under 0.1m deep). T3 also produced an undated pit F3. Pit F4 produced an abraded sherd of prehistoric sand-tempered pottery (probably of Middle-Late Iron Age date), a sherd of abraded Roman pottery and a small piece of tile which is probably peg-tile of late medieval or post-medieval date. F3 produced two small pieces of abraded Roman tile. A single sherd of Roman pottery and a piece from a Roman roof tile were among the finds recovered from subsoil (L3).<1>
