Description

A trial-trenched evaluation was undertaken in January 2018 on the site of Brook House (demolished following de-listing in 2014) in advance of the erection of seven new dwellings and associated works. Four trial trenches were excavated, totalling 155.0m x 1.8m; natural clay was encountered 0.30-0.35m in depth below current ground level. The evaluation defined several ditches and pits dating to the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, and two post-medieval bricks structures (F4 and F5 in T2), possibly drains (associated with Brook House). A significant quantity of finds of post-medieval date was recovered, mainly from ditch fills, and mostly of pottery (1.2kg) as well as ceramic building material (CBM)(41.4kg). In particular, some of the CBM is waste from misfiring and includes a complete (whole) waster floor or paving tile, and these indicate a brick and tile manufacture in the immediate area during the late 17th and early 18th century.<1>
