Description

Archaeological monitoring was undertaken in 2018 during groundworks for the construction of extensions (following demoltion of the existing garage) and outbuildings, including a new summer house and pool house, garage and boot room, to the rear of the existing property, amounting to c.185.5m of trenching (0.5-0.6m wide x 1.0-1.2m deep). In general, the trenches cut through modern topsoil (L1, c.0.3-0.45m thick) and subsoil (L2, c.0.2-0.35m thick) onto natural.<1> Four undated pits (one of which might possibly be modern) were discovered in the area of the new pool house and adjacent to soakaway (F1-F4). Pit F1 measured 0.5m wide x 0.6m deep, Pit F2 1.1m wide x 0.55m deep (F2 is possibly a linear), Pit F3 2.6m long x 0.55m deep and pit/posthole F4 measured 0.28m wide x 0.32m deep. With the possible exception of F3 (a large fragment of modern concrete was uncovered in the feature, close to the interface the modern topsoil and F3), none contained datable materials.
