Description
Archaeological monitoring was undertaken in March 2018 during groundworks for a rear extension (CBC application 172139). In total, 12m of foundations were excavated measuring 0.45m wide x 1-1.2m deep. These modern layers (c.0.65m deep) sealed a dark earth deposit (L14, at least 0.75m thick - the base was not encountered) identified as being of late Roman or post-Roman in the 2004/5 investigations (numbered variously as L3, L9 & L14; CAT Report 318). A quantity of Roman pottery, CBM and animal bone was recovered from this dark earth. Modern drains were the only cut features recorded.<1><2>
