Description

Archaeological investigation was undertaken in November 2017 in advance of the construction of a kitchen extension, sited behind the main church (as an extension to the 2009 extension) (Colchester Borough Council planning application 171573). The area of the existing gravel path, alongside the church, was reduced by 0.4m. Excavation occurred through two layers - a modern imported deposit (L1, c.0.13-0.15m) sealed infill material (L2). A test-pit, 1m square, was then excavated within the flower bed adjacent to the gravel path. Excavation occurred through modern topsoil (L3, c.0.06-0.13m thick) and L2 (c 0.19-0.26m thick) onto naturally-deposited sands (L4). A modern foundation F1 (0.55m wide x 0.42m deep), associated with the (demolished) choir vestry, and a modern pit F2 (0.45m deep) were defined in the test pit.<1> Archaeological monitoring of the groundworks was subsequently undertaken in January 2018, and this work revealed no archaeological remains.<2>
