Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken between November 2017 and January 2018 during the groundworks for the erection of a new extension to the dwelling (Colchester Borough Council application 171958). The area of the extension was reduced by c.0.35m from modern ground level and foundation trenches were excavated, c.14m long (in total) x 0.5m wide x 0.7m deep. The trenches were excavated through modern topsoil (L1), 0.2m deep, and subsoil (L2), 0.5m deep, onto natural sand and gravels (L3). A length of old drain pipe was also excavated and removed to the side of the house, through L1. A soakaway measuring 1.2m x 1.2m in area x 1.5m deep was excavated to the rear of the new extension, through 0.36m of modern topsoil and modern pond debris (L1) and 0.6m of subsoil (L2). No archaeological remains were encountered.<1>
